NCEES PE Civil Reference Handbook – This will be the only resource available to you during the PE Civil Exam CBT (computer based test). You are no longer permitted to bring books, notes, etc. into the testing site. The only thing available with be this reference handbook from NCEES and any design standards/codes specific to your depth section. SO, it is best to get to know this resource and the power of “CTRL+F” to search keywords. Use this along with the other items noted below during your studies as you prepare for the PE Exam.

PE Civil Reference Manual, 16th Edition  – This is the ultimate reference that you NEED to buy if you want to do well on the PE Exam. All of the other references are nice to have, but this is an absolute MUST! **This is also known as the CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual)**

PE Civil Quick Reference, 16th Edition – This is the great reference that gives you the most important equations, figures, and tables from the CERM. However, with the exam going computer based, this becomes less relevant to do well on the PE Exam.

PE Civil Practice Problems, 16th Edition – This is the great reference that gives you plenty of practice problems with great explanations to help you do well on the PE Exam.

Surveying Principles for Civil Engineers, 1st Edition – This is an oldie but a goodie for those looking for a cheap resource to give you a basic understanding of the principles of surveying. This is old and may have been updated in the recent editions, but it should be sufficient for any needs that you have for the PE Civil exam (not required). If you were taking the California Surveying Exam that goes along with the PE Exam, then I would definitely recommend the California Civil Surveying Reference Manual (see links below in the California PE California Surveying section). **Disclaimer: I haven’t personally used this one so I can’t speak to it’s content but if it’s like the 2nd Edition then it will be just right.**

Structural Depth Reference Manual for the PE Civil Exam, 5th Edition – This is the great reference that gives you some additional insight into the structural depth topics which the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (CERM) does not cover. (STRUCTURAL DEPTH ONLY)
