Secret #5: Most Important Step to Prepare for the Engineering Exams

Secret #5: Most Important Step to Prepare for the Engineering Exams

After you have signed up for any of the FE, PE, or SE Engineering Exams, the most important step in your exam prep is to do the following:

Make a plan!

It is a stressful time after you sign up and before you take the exam. The best way to alleviate the stresses is by putting together a study plan. Benjamin Franklin said that “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” He could not be more right, especially as it pertains to your study plan for your engineering exam. It does not matter which exam you are taking between the FE, PE or SE Exams. Each one will require you to put together a plan of attack.

A lot of people wonder when they should start studying for the exam, and in all honesty the answer is that “it depends.” This is the worst answer to give an engineer because we need boundaries and definite answers. The fact of the matter is that each person is so different. It really does depend on how well you study, how much you like to prepare leading up to the exam, and how much you are willing to sacrifice.

Be prepared to Change that Plan

If you have to modify your plan, you at least have a basis for it. When I was beginning to prepare my plan for the PE Exam, I had decided to start 4 months beforehand once I got the notice that I could take the exam. Work and life did not allow me to stick to my plan exactly how I intended. What actually ended up happening was that my studies did not start until the end of February to early March for the mid April exam. My planned 4 months of study had to be adjusted to the 1 to 1.5 months that I had left before exam day. If this happens to you as well, then do not fear!! It can be done… You just have to make the proper sacrifices to prepare yourself.

The exact layout and time allotment for a good study plan will be another secret for another day, but the earlier that you plan your studies the better off that you will be. However, nothing is impossible, so don’t ever give up hope in yourself and your abilities even if you only have 1 month left to study for the exam. Just dig in and get after your studies!
